Bed bugs

Bed bugs as human parasites

Bed bugs coexist with humans since centuries in varying global dimensions and distribution. They are a human parasite feeding on blood, preferably during the night as they avoid the light. In Europe, mostly the bed bug species Cimex lectularius occurs. They hide in dry cracks and crevasses of an apartment or house and are therefore often difficult to detect. Bed bugs stay in their hiding place until being attracted by increased carbon dioxide levels present in human breathing air. They are even able to survive up to one year without feeding under favorable conditions.

Bed bug life cylce

Bed bugs lay their eggs, which are similar looking to white rice corns, in their hiding places. The freshly hatched bed bugs are called nymphs, being the juvenile form. They too need a blood meal, for each of their five nymph stages until reaching the adult form. With each juvenile form, they shed their skin which can be an indication of a bed bug infestation.

The development from a newly hatched bed bug nymph to a sexually mature adult bed bug may take one month at 27°C, longer with lower temperatures. A fertilized female bed bug is then able to lay about 300 eggs in its lifetime of about 18 months. Of freshly laid eggs, nymphs hatch after about twelve days.

Bed bugs give you some privacy

The bites of a bed bug are often not noticed at first as one does not sense the stab. Later the bites may cause itching or even swelling. The bites are often arranged in a line as the bed bug tries different locations but besides that they do not have a typical appearance. Bed bugs preferably feed on uncovered human body parts such as the hands or feet, they usually do not join you underneath the bedcover. So far, no transmission of any disease is known by a bed bug bite (Lai et al 2016).
